Fortune Mill Walkthrough — Room Order & Escape
A Fortune Mill walkthrough in room order: when to pay each 1,000,000 blocker, the Shadow Realm damage fix, and the pre-escape checklist.
Community-sourced — compiled from the official Steam store page and cross-checked across public community guides. Costs are early-build price points reported by guides and may shift with patches; the route logic doesn't.
The One Rule: Blockers Are Tolls, Not Goals
Every exit in Fortune Mill is a character demanding 1,000,000 of the local currency. The trap almost every new player falls into is paying the moment they can afford it. Paying late is the whole skill: each room's engine keeps paying you after you leave — helpers, passives, and permanent multipliers don't — so buy the engine first and let the toll be a formality. The route below is the order that does that with the least idle time.
Quick Route Table
| Step | Do this | Then leave when… |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Room 1 darts: build the engine — value and bullseye upgrades, Multi-Throw, Rattling Gunner, Trial Mode runs | …you have a Trial Mode multiplier (~1.4x+), both Room 1 helpers, and steady gold |
| 2 | Check Shadow Realm once it unlocks from the dart tree — one honest attempt, then leave | …you've seen your DPS. If it's tiny, that's data, not a reason to grind |
| 3 | Pay the Verminous bribe (1,000,000 gold) and enter Room 2 | — |
| 4 | Room 2 scratchers: prize value → ticket size → jackpot symbols → Green Tickets → Accountant Toad | …Toad is hired and one strong ticket type is producing best-wins |
| 5 | Pay the Gorgon bribe (1,000,000 money), then Pachinko: ball flow → buckets → peg XP → Auto Drop → dice → Bubba → Poker Pirate | …tickets flow well enough to fund Rimmington's 1,000,000 |
| 6 | Pay Rimmington (1,000,000 tickets), then Sushi: fuel → merge tiers → ribbons; spin Poppy's Wheel on the side | …Hivemind's 1,000,000 ribbons is in sight and your merge board runs itself |
| 7 | Pay Hivemind (1,000,000 ribbons), then Gacha: unlock machines, keep pull volume up, pedestal the strong items, trash duplicates into stuffing | — |
| 8 | Pre-escape checklist (below), then pay the Executor (1,000,000 stuffing) and confirm the escape | — |
Room 1: Build the Dart Engine
Room 1 is the backbone of the run — it produces gold, your first helpers, Trial Mode, Auto Throw, and Shadow Realm access. Buy upgrades that improve every throw before anything that improves one throw. Reported early price points:
- Better Nuggets (from ~8 gold) — more value on every gold pickup. First buy, always.
- Bigger Bullseye (from ~30 gold) — bigger zones make the whole bullseye ladder and Trial Mode easier.
- Fancy Flights (~400 gold) — all darts drop 1.5x gold.
- Multi-Throw — first extra dart early; more darts compound everything above.
- Rattling Gunner (~3,000 gold) — auto-fires mini darts; your first helper and a long-term damage contributor.
- Trial Mode (~5,000 gold) — converts your best dart score into a permanent multiplier. A score in the 40s gives roughly 1.4–1.5x early.
- Magician Mousie — opens the special-dart upgrades that carry late-game scaling.
- Auto Throw (~65,000 gold) — throws every 16.67 seconds, even while you're in another room. Buy before long Room 2 sessions.
The bullseye ladder doubles as your Trial Mode scoring plan — each new zone is both an achievement and a higher ceiling:
| Zone | Gold multiplier | Achievement |
|---|---|---|
| Red | 1.5x | Bullseye! |
| Purple (Super) | 2x | Super Bullseye! |
| Blue (Duper) | 3x | Duper Bullseye! |
| Yellow (Ultra) | 5x | Ultra Bullseye! |
| Green (Turbo) | 8x | Turbo Bullseye! |
| Orange (Royal) | 12x | Royal Bullseye! |
| Pinnacle | 20x | Pinnacle Bullseye! |
Two easy misses while you're here: the bottle in the dart room hides the Bottle of Hope and Metal Bottle achievements (keep aiming darts at it through its state changes), and Trial Mode only gets re-run when the board improves — new zones or new darts raise the ceiling, a weak board doesn't.
The Shadow Realm Damage Fix
The single most-searched Fortune Mill problem: you enter Shadow Realm and do almost no damage. First attempt DPS in the low double digits is normal — the system is telling you to upgrade, not to grind. How it actually works:
- Marks are the real damage stat. You bank one mark per 5 minutes spent outside the realm, and each mark is +10% damage. Waiting is a mechanic — frequent tiny attempts bank nothing.
- Dart count and Gunner speed are the base. The boss is a DPS check against everything Room 1 produces: more darts, faster Rattling Gunner (cheap Faster Machinery levels), Multi-Throw.
- Special dart damage is the unlock. The dart tree has Shadow-Realm-specific damage — arcane-style darts that add flat damage per hit. Without one of these upgrades, normal darts barely register.
- Extended Stay is a late buy. Extra visit seconds only matter once your damage is already close to a kill.
The loop: leave, upgrade darts, bank marks, return. First boss down pays Boss Slain and permanent gold multipliers that feed every room.
Room 2: Scratch Tickets and Best Wins
Room 2 opens with Crazy Cash Circles — weak-looking, and they stay weak if you judge them before upgrading. Push in this order: prize value, higher prize numbers, more rows and columns (bigger tickets), jackpot symbols (the three-symbol jackpot target), then Green Tickets (Money Maze Madness). Purple Tickets (High Roller Heist) come later as the risk/reward layer.
The room's engine is Accountant Toad: hired in Room 2, he pays out every 30 seconds based on your best wins across all ticket types. He changes what "progress" means — after Toad, a strong ticket run isn't a payout, it's a permanent raise. Abacus Frog (~40,000 money) compounds it: ticket play grants EXP, and each ticket level-up permanently boosts that ticket's income. Two consequences:
- Big time win! (10,000+ dollars from a single scratcher) is best done after upgrades, via a high-value Green Ticket run, a jackpot hit, or a later ticket color — never by farming the starter ticket.
- There are five jackpot colors (orange, green, an intermediate color, blue, grey) — underplaying one color is the classic reason a cleanup run stalls at 4th or 5th JACKPOT.
Pachinko: Diagnose the Bottleneck First
Pachinko's upgrade list is long, but every problem is one of two bottlenecks. Out of balls? Buy ball gain per fill, Auto Drop (up to 2 balls per second), Bubba (launches balls at high-value buckets), and Poker Pirate (a five-card hand where better hands win more balls — the burst refill that keeps the room moving). Balls flowing but tickets thin? Buy ticket gain, more buckets and peg rows, and peg XP so repeated hits scale. The three dice games (roll a 6, 8, or 10 to play the Red, Blue, and Green bonus games) are side income and achievements — worth having rolling, not worth stalling for.
Sushi: Fuel, Merge, Ribbons
Sushi is a merge board: fuel generates pieces, dragging pieces together merges higher tiers, higher tiers pay more ribbons, and Hivemind's exit toll is 1,000,000 ribbons. Slow pieces → fuel upgrades; weak pieces → starting tier; thin ribbons → ribbon gain. Sushi also quietly feeds other rooms — one midgame bonus grants +1 life to Money Maze Madness, which is exactly the kind of reason to check older rooms when progress stalls. While you're here: Poppy the Kangaroo opens Poppy's Wheel (top prize 2.00x all money for all rooms — the Lucky Spin achievement) and Ghost Janitor is the other helper on this stretch. Spin the wheel during normal play; it's a long-odds cleanup item if saved for last.
Gacha: Pull Volume Is the Strategy
The late game is a throughput problem. Unlock machines (Green Capsules at 5 tokens first), keep token generation rising, and learn the item rule that breaks new players: passive items work anywhere; pedestal items do nothing until placed on a pedestal. If a strong bonus seems inactive, check your pedestal slots. Trash duplicates — they convert into stuffing, which is conveniently what the Executor's final 1,000,000 toll is paid in. Rare/Epic/Legendary/Pearlescent pulls are pure volume: more machines, more pulls, no trick.
Before You Confirm the Escape
The Executor's bribe triggers a run-ending escape prompt. Confirming ends the current run — everything missable below gets much harder after. Check:
| Check | Why it's missable |
|---|---|
| Pearlescent & Legendary Pull | The two rarest Gacha colors — pure volume, easiest to leave too late |
| Lucky Spin | Poppy's Wheel top prize; long odds |
| 5th JACKPOT! | The grey ticket color is easy to underplay |
| I Had Trips! | 3-of-a-kind or better from Poker Pirate — chance-based |
| Boss Slain | Shadow Realm's first boss — one last marks banked attempt |
| Pinnacle Bullseye! | Forgotten if you left Room 1 early |
| Bottle of Hope / Metal Bottle | Missed if you never shot the Room 1 bottle |
| Bin Goosey & Gumball Goose | Late Gacha helpers |
What the escape itself means — and what New Game+ and Lethal Mode change — is the endings guide's job. For how the rooms' systems feed each other mid-run, see the synergy guide.
Mistakes Worth Skipping
| Mistake | Better habit |
|---|---|
| Paying a blocker the moment you can afford it | Buy the room's engine first; the toll is cheaper than the momentum you lose |
| Re-entering Shadow Realm on a weak board | Marks bank over real-world minutes outside — wait, upgrade, return once |
| Spamming Trial Mode on an unchanged board | Re-run only after a new zone or new darts raises the ceiling |
| Buying Extended Stay before damage is real | Duration fixes near-kills, not weak DPS |
| Farming starter tickets for Big time win! | Upgrade, then take the 10k from a Green Ticket run or a jackpot |
| Hoarding Gacha duplicates | Trash them into stuffing — the final toll is paid in it |
| Ignoring one jackpot color all run | Rotate colors once jackpot symbols unlock |
| Confirming the escape with missables open | Run the checklist above — the prompt ends the run |
Fortune Mill Walkthrough — Quick Answers
How do you beat Fortune Mill?
Follow the linear room route — darts, scratch tickets, pachinko, sushi, gacha — while treating Shadow Realm as a parallel damage-check system. Build each room's engine, pay that room's 1,000,000 blocker only once the engine is online, and confirm the Executor's final 1,000,000-stuffing bribe only after clearing your missables.
What order should you unlock the rooms in?
The main route is fixed: Room 1 darts → Room 2 scratch tickets → Pachinko → Sushi → Gacha → the Executor. Shadow Realm unlocks from the dart tree early and runs alongside the whole route — visit it, but don't live in it.
How long does a first clear of Fortune Mill take?
Around 4–6 hours learning naturally; an optimized route lands near 4.5. Cleanup-heavy runs chasing every rare Gacha pull and jackpot take longer.
When should you pay each blocker in Fortune Mill?
Late. Pay the Verminous bribe only after Room 1's engine is up (helpers, Trial Mode, Multi-Throw), the Gorgon bribe after Accountant Toad and at least one strong ticket type, and so on — each room should keep contributing before you leave it behind.
